Standardized Testing for College Applications

TESTING:

7th and 8th grade – Start by taking the SAT through the Johns Hopkins program.

Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth

Taking the SAT in those grades helps the student by taking away some of the anxiety associated with the test and getting an early idea of how the student might score in high school.  This permits the family to begin looking at what types of colleges might be within the student’s capabilities for acceptance.

9th, 10th and 11th Grade – Take the SAT Subject Tests – either 2 or 3 when required by the colleges to which your student is applying.

10th and 11th Grade – Take the PSAT

PSAT

This test correlates well with the score a student may receive on the SAT.  It is also the test that enables a student to test into the National Merit Scholarship Program when a student scores high enough in the 11th grade testing year.  It is important to take the test in 10th grade as a practice test.  The test is given at CV on a Saturday in mid-October, and students will sign up for it near the beginning of the school  year.

If a student becomes a National Merit Finalist by scoring high enough on the test (approximately 15,000 of those taking the PSAT in a given year), there are scholarship possibilities available through the National Merit company, corporate scholarships or college and university scholarships.
